I'm on the Chicago Freecycle list. I think it's a very cool concept -- people in need can ask for stuff, and people who have stuff to give can offer it up. No money is exchanged. However, it makes me crazy when people abuse this (nobody NEEDS an X-Box, people!), or want things they can't spell "I need a labtop") I try really hard not to judge others, because you never know what people are going through. I have answered offers for stuff like a shoe organizer, and have given up clothes, toys and even an air conditioner that just needed a minor repair. It seems to work out well for most people.I just got this e-mail through Freecycle and I'm totally disturbed in a very snotty and unpleasant way. "help im a single parent that is 24 years of age i have a 3 year old in twins thats 7 months i dont get much help with my kids there fathers are no shows my in the twins are so expensive it seems that im buying everyday well winter is coming my daughter could still fit her clothes from last year i can't say that about the twins i was wondering if any family out there have baby clothes from 6 months and up for girl or boy there twins they also need walkers and toys and winter jackets everything receive with be gladly appreciated thanks and happy freecycling" Okay, let's put aside the horrendous assault on my English degree, shall we? We have a 24-year old woman who has three kids by two different, absent fathers. Where are the pro-life protesters to feed and clothe these kids? Why did this woman allow herself to get pregnant the first time; and if that was an "oops," why did she let it happen again with a different guy? What is she doing to try to improve her situation? What can she do with an obviously limited education and budget? And why, oh why, am I mad at her, even just a teeny bit? Is there a budding Republican mindset lurking deep in my psyche? My English degree crumpled and died, too.
I have to assume her story is a bit more complicated than we can see, and I assume she is either pro-life or couldn't afford an abortion. Either way, other seriously pro-lifers should be doing more to help the people who are here and breathing than trying to demand more come into the world's environment.

Although her story is unclear, I'm with you JT. She could have kept her legs closed or been a little more careful. Heck. I'm 25 and have been with my partner for a long time (8yrs...you do the math). I'm not ready to have kids so I make sure I don't get myself into an oops. It's the least any responsible adult can do.
If she wasn't ready to take that responsibility, she should have practiced abstinence. And please, no one try to tell me that the condom broke twice. Save it for an episode of Jerry.

You're welcome to your opinion, although I think you're reading a bit much into what you think is my own high self-opinion. You probably don't read my blog much so you don't know me any better.
I'm admitting in my blog that I'm uncomfortable with how the letter made me feel; and the first thing I said was that I wasn't proud of it. Part of what makes me angry is my own inability to help others in a rough situation because my own is so tight. I do what I can but I have to pick and choose what I do.
If I had my druthers, I'd be a professional philanthropist, trust me.

I'm on the Freecycle St. Charles and St. Louis groups and I get sick of seeing all of those Wanted postings. I've have gotten some good stuff from there and have gotten rid of tons.
