pros and cons
05.23.05 (6:29 pm)   [edit]

It's established that I don't like my job. You know it, I know it, my fucking cats know it.

Now you know that I might be able to get a different job within my company. The only open question was whether I could keep my current salary.

The answer is no, I can't. I'd have to take about a 12 percent pay cut. The upsides are:

1. More creative job
2. Chance for advancement within dept
3. Chance to move into Store Operations, my own personal mecca
4. Work for a nicer/cooler boss
5. Work with friendlier people
6. More visibility
7. Opportunity for travel

The downsides:
1. Less money
2. Have to work my way back up to my current salary

Can we afford the pay cut? Probably not well, but we could squeak by. However, is that worth it as I embark on having another baby? On the other hand, is the continued sacrifice of my emotional well-being worth the extra $6k a year?

I'm extremely depressed.

I will definitely get the job that I like despite the paycut. Working on a job you don't like is certainly energy draining. But that's just me, it might be very difficult on your financial situation. In that case, maybe wait a little bit to you have saved up more. My two cents :)

I took a paycut to take my current job. It was 5 years ago and I have never regreted it. My peace of mind is worth more. Of course I had to cut back on some things, but it was the best decision I could have made. Good luck with your decision

if they can't increase your salary, can they give you any other perk, like extra time off? company car? a hunky male assistant? ;)

Can you do any freelancing on the side to add some $'s elsewhere, or is that absurd to consider with 3 kids? Or could DH make up the difference?

I like the company car and hunky assistant perks. I didn't know you could get those things at my level... I thought you had to be Jennifer Aniston!

Good for you... especially since the positives out numbered the negatives. Keep us update.

I'm glad you've decided to go for it. After all, being happy is totally worth the loss in $.

I got in on this one kind of late but I was going to tell you to take it too. You've already got enough stress and the baby will only add more. Strees reduction will be well worth it in the long run. Beside we all know your a kick ass woman anyway so you'll work back up to your present salary with ease!

Take it from someone who took the ultimate pay cut to stay home and be a mom. Your health is worth so very much more, not only to you but to everyone who depends on you at home. We've never looked back and I don't live on valium anymore...
Well, OKAY, I miss the valium but not the stress associated with taking it.

Oh I wasn't saying you should stay home... I think you should take the small pay cut Get your mitss on the cool job and make it up by selling keychains on ebay or something. I mean, if you really need the dough. LOL!
