Political madness
12.30.03 (2:46 pm)   [edit]
Is it wrong to support a candidate just because you think he's most likely to defeat another one?

I'm a little frustrated by politics, and don't like discussing it with others. But the large number of democratic candidates ensures that they're just going to split the democratic vote. I feel like I'm being pushed along by the wave of Howard Dean supporters. Other than a wild e-mail my uncle sent me that hints at Dean being anti-Israel (which I have yet to verify), I seem to be comfortable with most of his positions.

But is that enough? And isn't the cult of Dean for America a little scary?

Perhaps you should reflect on what JFK did for Adlai Stevenson in the '56 democratic convention and how it helped JFK in '60.

Dean may be riding a huge initial wave of support, but it may be for nothing once the election race begins in ernest. I feel that the democrats aren't strong enough, unfortunately, to remove the stranglehold of the 'Petro-Nobility' on the executive branch in '04.

Remember there's just one Dem against Bush in November. Dean is having success now because there are 8 other candidates which effectively allows him to appear left-wing, although he's not. The other Dems don't have a chance in their own party.

Yes, it is wrong to vote for a candidate because you think he's most likely to defeat the other.

You should vote for the candidate you feel will do the best job and whose policies you agree with the most. You should be confident and comfortable with putting this person in control of your country.

Everyone should vote like this, but they don't and that's part of what's wrong with this country.

Dean was quoted as saying that he shall take a "more even-handed" approach to the Arab/Israel conflict, whatever that means.

In my opinion, I take that to mean that he is planning on being more "fair" to the palestinians and less "fair" to Israel. In my opinion, that's a bad thing. He should be truly fair to both parties. I don't know how you could act more "even-handedly" and I'm not sure I want to wait and find out.

Dean also lacks an actual stance on foreign policy. I only have heard about how he hated the war in Iraq. I'd like to see less criticism and more pragmatism, but that's just me...

Vote for whom you feel is the most qualifyed to lead the free-world.

If you want a suggestion, check out Joe Lieberman or Westley Clark.

They're not democratic pretty-boys who are filled with fluff. They've actually got interesting things to say.

But do what you feel is best.

When America votes, that's their voices coming to tell the rest of the country where they stand.

Do you want to be a blind follower/cheerleader or do you want to voice for what is right?

Research! Don't listen to the hype! Vote as yourself, not a sheep! :)

The power of one trumps the many!

Thanks all for your comments. Red, you have helped put it in perspective. I went Gore/Lieberman last time, and I will probably stick with Lieberman again. The Cult of Dean is kind of creeping me out...
